Welcome to Winning for LIfe (WFL)!
Sports are our life at WFL...playing competitive lacrosse from youth through college helped shape and define us not only as student-athletes and coaches but also as women striving for excellence in all that we do in our lives...
We want to share with you what we are committed to and believe in...we place high value on competing at the highest level and winning; on working hard in lacrosse and life; playing and living with integrity and sportsmanship; and striving for excellence (i.e. doing the best we can given our circumstances) in any given moment on field and off.
Who are we? We are the proud family of teams, coaches, administrators, and staff of the WFL advanced/select Minnesota girl's lacrosse teams...
-
Lakers (2 teams) (2011 grads; and 2012 & 2013 grads);
-
Storm (2014, 2015 & 2016 grads);
-
Monarchs (2017 & 2018 grads); and
-
Northstars (women's postcollegiate team).
As a young organization we are already building a legacy of excellence...we are committed to advancing the sport of lacrosse in Minnesota and in helping young women take their game to the highest level, develop friendships across community and school rivalry lines, be recruited at the NCAA DI, DII, DIII, NAIA and WDIA levels; and become people of positive influence on and off of the field.
Please browse our website to read more about our highly competitive teams and their highly experienced coaches, our board members, camps and clinics, etc. (Please note that we will provide as much information as possible about the student-athletes without violating privacy laws.)
To our WFL current and former players and families - thank you for your support, patience along the way as we continue to learn, create, grow and develop as a nascant organization, and for your enthusiasm!
Proudly,
WFL Board, Coaches and Staff
Testimonial...
"I would not be the lacrosse player that I am today without the help of Janet Holdsworth and the Lakers Lacrosse program, but more than that, I would not be the person that I am today without the program. The Lakers lacrosse program is unlike any I have ever heard of or experienced, and offers a unique and gratifying experience of intense lacrosse competition and training, along with team bonding, leadership training, and memorable community service activities. The friendships made on the Lakers last years, and are much deeper than the rudimentary bonds formed between teammates. Fellow Lakers honestly become like family, and when you get a group of girls together that 1) have a passion and drive for the game of girls lacrosse 2) have a willingness to learn and grow as lacrosse players and people 3) have top quality coaching via the Lakers program and 4) build friendships so deep that other teams envy and fear our chemistry, magic happens and wins follow. As I go off to play division 2 lacrosse this year, and after having 3 division 1 scholarship offers, I am beginning to realize just how many doors the Lakers Lacrosse experience has opened for me, and highly recommend any serious lacrosse player to try out for this team, not only for the lacrosse skills she will surely gain, but also for the unforgettable memories and friendships she will create."

posted 06/11/2010 Thank you everyone for trying out for the 2010 MN Storm! We had 65 girls tryout for 31 spots so the competition was fierce! We are so excited to see the high caliber of talent at this age!
If you were not selected this year, please don’t be discouraged! There were simply too few spots for many, many talented players. Please keep playing and come back next year!
New Players:
New players and parents are invited to an information meeting and roster signing at 5:00 on Sunday prior to the 6:00 – 8:00 pm practice at Hopkins High School by the turf field. For returning players, this meeting is not required. The $485 team fee (check made out to Winning for Life) is due at the roster signing. We will have a full practice schedule to hand out at that time and will be able to answer any questions you may have.
We have selected a roster of 18 players for the US Lacrosse National Championship Tournament July 17-20 in FL (as well as 3 alternates in the event of illness or injury prior to the tournament). Selected players need to confirm their U15 roster spot with a tournament deposit fee of $600 (check made out to Winning for Life) at the roster signing on Sunday. Total cost to participate in the tournament is $1100 (includes airfare, hotel, food and 2 day pass to Disney). The team payment for airfare for is due on Monday June 14th so it is critical that we receive your $600 on Sunday. Alternates do not need to pay anything. In the event that they are needed, they would purchase a spot from a rostered player who could not attend.
In January we will be sending two squads to the Sandstorm Tournament in CA over MLK weekend– one entry in the High School Division (Class of 2014) and one in the Middle School Division (Classes of 2015 / 2016).

posted 05/24/2010 WFL Players are playing collegiate lacrosse at ALL competitive levels across the U.S. - NCAA DI, DII, DIII, NAIA and WDIA! At WFL we help players find the best fit for them in terms of academics and lacrosse. We will work with individual players and their families in the process. We have many connections at the collegiate level around the country - relationships we have built for years.
Most recently of the 2010 Lakers graduates we are proud to report that Jennifer Zandlo (Totino Grace) is the first goalie in Minnesota girl's lacrosse history to sign DI at Niagra University in NY. Danica Cutshall (Lakeville) and Maddie Uhlfig (Centennial) have both signed to play DII (Regis and Gannon, respectively). Abbie Baldwin (St. Louis Park) is headed to play DIII lacrosse at the University of Puget Sound. Zoe Leschak (Wayzata), Ashlee Miller (Wayzata), and Lisa Hirsch (Edina) will be playing for the UofM (13th in the WDIA!). And, many others will be playing at the DIII and WDIA levels!! Congratulations to ALL of you for becoming terrific, and deservingly honored players who have found a fit academically and athletically for these next four years of your life journey.
Lakers currently playing in college are situated at The Ohio State University (DI), Adrian (DIII), Colorado College (DIII), Notre Dame University (DI), Syracuse (DI), Wooster (DIII), Dartmouth (WDIA), Colorado State (WDIA), Detroit Mercy (DI), Tennessee Wesleyan (NAIA), University of Minnesota (WDIA), Cal Poly (WDIA), St. Ben's (WDIA), and many others!

Congratulations to Maria Slusser and Beth Lyman, co-head coaches of the MN Storm U15 team, who recently won the 3M Excellence in Coaching Award presented by the Swarm! These two women have positively contributed to developing girl's lacrosse at the youth level in Minnesota and they serve as amazing role models on and off of the field! (WFL coach, Maureen Sanderson of Rochester,is a 2009 recipient of the award.)

We are not ones to toot our own horn (we tend to take a more modest approach!), but with alternative teams popping up we did some research about how our Lakers players have performed...
Since the WFL Minnesota Lakers started three years ago (we are entering our 4th year this summer!)...
--Lakers players have come from over 25 different high school programs over the years!!;
---3 out of 4 Minnesota State High School Player of the Year have been a Laker;
---Every Minnesota US Lacrosse All-American player has been a Laker;
---Every Minnesota US Lacrosse All-American Honorable Mention player has been a Laker;
---The 2009 Minnesota High School All-State teams included 13 Lakers
Almost ALL of the former Lakers are playing lacrosse in college at all Levels (NCAA DI, DII, DIII, and WDIA)...Lakers play at The Ohio State University, Adrian, Colorado College, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Wooster, Dartmouth (WDIA), Colorado State, Detroit Mercy (on DI scholarship!), Tennessee Wesleyan, University of Minnesota, Cal Poly, and many others!
Besides our tradition of WFL teams and players winning on and off of the field, we are also proud of the fact that our highly skilled 2009 players came from over 20 different high school and 16 different middle school programs. Our girls develop deep friendships across communities and beyond school rivalries and we believe that WFL is positively impacting the growth of the sport - throughout many communities - in Minnesota.

The Lakers and Storm will be traveling in 2010 to the BEST recruiting tournaments, festivals and offering an international experience. When you are selected to WFL teams you can be assured EXCELLENT coaching by former NCAA players and current college and high school coaches, ADVANCED instruction and skill development, HIGHLY competitive play AND leadership development as a student-athlete!!!
Please note that players are not required to attend all tournaments listed...we will check in with each player and her family and find out which fits best for you and your schedules, finances, etc. The tourneys extending beyond summer are offered as opportunities for players - again, not required!! (We know that many of you play multiple sports and may be in-season with another sport - those opportunities and experiences are very important!!)
